PPUEA reacts

ITANAGAR, Jul 29: While referring to the news item published in a section of local dailies today regarding the assault and extortion of NHPC staffs by PPUEA members,  the PPUEA pointed out ‘some anomalies which defy common reasoning’.

“According to a press release on 26th of July it was clearly mentioned that at around 11.00 am PPUEA president along with four others assaulted one Litin Das, an employee of NHPC and again on 29th July, NHPC in a release stated that the same person  -  Litin Das is not an employee of the organization (NHPC).  The very reason based on which the president and the other four of PPUEA were arrested now stands nullified as per the statement of NHPC staff,” the  PPUEA said in a release.  “We do accept that a major PSU like NHPC is there for the wellbeing and development of our state but due to few officers like R.K Gupta, ED and K.Riram, PRO the relation between the organization and the general public takes a beating. After several failed attempts to meet the Executive Director all thwarted by K. Riram, PRO, the unfortunate incident of heated argument took place,  the PPUEA said.

 

New hostels demanded

ITANAGAR, Jul 29: Informing about the pathetic condition of boys’ and girls’ hostel of Govt. Higher Secondary School, Likabali, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) state unit has urged the education department for new boys and girls hostel for the school.

In a release, it said, the hostels are lying unrepaired for the past many years. Rather than being called a hostel, they have now become cow sheds.

Due to the pathetic condition, the students have to stay in rent houses, while some have even dropped their schooling. If this continues, future of the students will be doomed and brilliant and intelligent Student will never be produce in our area, it expressed.

 

Daporijo rape incident condemned

ITANAGAR, Jul 29: The Tingi Aluk Welfare Society (TAWS) has expressed shock over the Daporijo rape incident wherein a six-year-old girl was raped and grievously injured by a 23 year old man on July 23.

Condemning the heinous crime, the society appealed the law enforcing authority to award the rapist exemplary punishment as per law.

 

Congress wins 2 ZP, 22 AS and 53 GP seats at Tirbin

AALO, Jul 29:  Congress captured both the 7-Tirbin and 7A-Tirbin Zilla Parishad seats besides winning 22 Anchal Samity and 53 GP seats.

According to DIPRO report, Bajap Jilen was declared elected from 7-Tirbin and Yakek Lombi from 7A-Tirbin ZP (Reserved) segments. DIPRO

 

BJP RTI cell demands enquiry

ITANAGAR, Jul 29: The state BJP RTI Cell today complained that an amount of  Rs 20.37 crore has been misappropriated in construction of Zemithang SHP ( 3x 1000 kw).

In a complaint letter to the Principal Secretary (Vigilance),  BJP RTI cell  co-convenor Loku Sono alleged that without completion of project work, the construction agency  in connivance with managing director of hydro project development corporation had withdrawn the  bill. The  construction works has not been done as per DIPR, the letter said. It demanded enquiry into the matter and punishment to the guilty as per law. As per record produced by Sono,  the complaint letter was also forwarded to the principal secretary (vigilance) for its perusal by Tawang district administration.

 

PR members, villagers renovate CK road

ITANAGAR, Jul 29: A social service was organized to repair the Changlang-Khonsa (CK) road by panchayat members and villagers under the leadership of Khela-Lamsa Block ZPM Sontung Bangsia on July 27.

The CK road which falls under Trans-Arunachal-Highway is in a deplorable condition due to lack of maintenance for many years. The villagers of the entire CK belt are facing untold sufferings, specially those serious patients who have to be evacuated to Khonsa District Hospital or Assam for treatment.

It may be mentioned here that there are more than 16 villages in the CK belt and this belt is one of the most backward, especially in the field of education.  Poor road connectivity can be cited as the main reason for this, asserted Bangsia.

A public memorandum was submitted to the CM to provide funds for repair and maintenance of the road. DIPRO

 

10th Independent Cup Football Tournament

ITANAGAR, Jul 29: The 10th Independent Cup Football Tournament will begin from August 1 at Chidu Chigo General Field, Likabali.

Many teams from West Siang district and the neighbouring state of Assam will be participating in the tournament. The winning team will walk away with a trophy and a cash prize of Rs 50,000/-.

 

Orientation training

ITANAGAR, Jul 29: Five days orientation training for fishery demonstrator on Aqua-culture practices and their management commenced at Fisheries Training Centre, Emchi near Doimukh today.

This is the second batch of training planned during this fish breeding season.

All together 10 fishery demonstrators from different districts are participating.

In his inaugural address, J Taba, Director of Fisheries explained the importance of conducting such orientation training and exhorted upon the fishery demonstrators to work with dedication and commitment towards development of aquaculture in their respective areas. He urged them to  motivate fish farmers to diversify their activities and to increase both fish and fish seeds production.

 

Coordination meeting held

HAWAI, Jul 29: A coordination meeting of newly elected PRI members of 4- Hawai-Walong Anchal Samity Block was held in the conference hall at the DCs Office at Hawai, Anjaw today.

Anchal Chairperson including all elected ASMs  and GPM's were present in the meeting.

Addressing the gathering,  Member Secretary cum BDO, Hawai briefed about the schemes to be undertaken under MGNERGA and its proper implementation. He suggested the members to assist the BLO's for proper registration of new eligible voters in the area. He suggested the members to play vital role and look forward for community based schemes and also to maintain grass root level as well as transparency in all govt schemes.

 

AMSU disowns press statement

ITANAGAR, Jul 29:  While referring to the  news item published in this daily under the  caption “ AMSU calls on governor and CS” on July 27, All Mishmi Students Union (AMSU) president Sohalo Ngadong today said that it was the personal view of AMSU general secretary Ayingso Kri, not  the stand of AMSU. Claiming that the statement was politically motivated, AMSU president said that the Union did not authorize him (GS) to release such statement and therefore, rejected the statement.

While demanding explanation from its GS for issuing such statement, the  Union apologizes to local MLA Kalikho Pul and wishes to work hand in hand with him for overall development of Anjaw.

The members observed one minute silence for eternal peace of all the departed souls.

 

ASF asks for continuing road construction

ITANAGAR, Jul 29: The Arunachal Students’ Federation (ASF) has urged upon the Capital Complex administration to continue the maintenance of NH52-A from Itanagar to Banderdewa.

In a letter addressed to the DC, it said that the bad road condition has badly affected the traffic system in Capital.

Usually it takes about 15 minutes to drive down to Naharlagun from Itanagar and vice versa, but due to the bad road condition it takes three to four hours, it said.

The development package for construction of four-lane road has already been sanctioned by the Centre, why the work is being delayed?, it further questioned.

 

Stop ILP to suspected Bangladeshis

ITANAGAR, Jul 29: The All Nyishi Youth Association (ANYA) has demanded to stop issuance of ILP to suspected Bangladeshi Muslims within 15 days.

In a one-point memorandum addressed to the chief minister, while also asking for detection and deporting of the illegal Bangladeshi immigrants from the state, ANYA said, the state has witnessed increase in criminal activities by these people who come to the state as manual labourers.

While also seeking stern action against people who bring them as labourers in the state without obtaining proper ILP, it warned of democratic movement like ‘Detect and Deport Movement’ against Bangladeshi Muslim.

 

‘Book the attacker’

ITANAGAR, Jul 29: Claiming that a UDC of the office of Capital Complex District administration  has appeared at the Banderdewa CO office premises with Dao today  and started beating an employee of the circle office, the All Banderdewa Circle Students’ Union in a  complaint letter to Capital SP urged him to book the person under relevant section of law  for disturbing the functioning of the office.

While the person who was being attacked was saved by the CO, the office hours was disrupted for about half an hour, it said.

 

Creations of C & D posts urged

ITANAGAR, July 29: The All Arunachal Pradesh Labour Union (AAPLU) has demanded for creation of group C & D posts in agriculture and horticulture departments.

In a memorandum submitted to the agriculture and horticulture minister, it claimed that the two departments are facing lots of problem as there are no group C & D staffs to assist them.

 

Compensation sought

ITANAGAR, Jul 29: Informing that 15 houses, valuable utensils, domestic animals and suspension bridge which connect Papu Nalah to Sanglo Putung were damaged and washed away on the stormy night of July 26 last, the Doi Kilo Welfare Committee has requested the concern authority to assess the loss incurred and to provide necessary relief at the earliest.

 

Social service conducted

ITANAGAR, July 29: The Senki Park Youth Association conducted a social service on the sector roads of Division-IV to CM Bungalow yesterday. All the residents of Division-VI participated in it. Councilor of Ward no. 7 Ngurang Yache, while participating, offered the services of a JCB, while Secretary, City Congress Committee Tadar Loma gave some materials for use in the social service.

Meanwhile, the association has appealed the state government to provide fund for the maintenance of Division-IV road.

 

Rajya Puraskar Testing Camp for BS& G begins

ITANAGAR, Jul 29: A five-day State Level Rajya Puraskar Testing Camp for Bharat Scout and Guides began at Bordumsa, Changlang district on July 27.

31 scouts, 30 guides and eight trainers/examiners from Lohit, Tirap and Changlang district are participating in the programme.

Attending the inaugural session as chief guest, ADC, Bordumsa Kento Riba, emphasized on the importance of nation building.

ITANAGAR, Jul 29: Neelam Welfare Society (NWS) felicitated the class X and XII toppers and other achievers belonging to Neelam clan in a function organized on July 27.

Those meritorious students felicitated were Neelam Azeer (9.8 CGPA), Neelam Sango (9.2 CGPA), both class X and Neelam Yabin (65%), Cl XII. They were awarded merit certificates and scholarship.

Regularization of NRHM nurse demanded

ITANAGAR, July 29: The Arunachal Pradesh Abo Tani Clans Youth Organization (APATCYO) has demanded for regularization of all the NRHM contractual nurses with regular hiked salaries.

In a letter addressed to the health and family welfare minister, it said the condition of NRHM staffs is pathetic with no regular payment.

With the already poor condition, it was unnecessary for them to recruit 25 contractual posts of GDMO (Allopathy), 15 GDMO (Dental Surgeon) and 22 GDMO (Homeopathy) on July 16 last, it said.

Why the salary of the NRHM staff of under contractual nurse is different from other states?, it questioned.

 

89 days NEEPCO staff reiteratesdemand, warns of tool down strike

ITANAGAR, July 29: Reiterating its demand for job regularization, the All Local and Non-tribal 89 days basis employees of RHEP, NEEPCO Yazali has warned of pen/tool down for 30 days beginning from Aug 1.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman and the managing director of NEEPCO Ltd, it further charged that the NEEPCO will be held responsible for any untoward incidences during the agitation period.

The employees had earlier on various occasions submitted numerous memorandums and have also agitated for the demand.

Fire guts 13 houses in Kamba

CM asks people to take extreme precautions to prevent house fire

ITANAGAR, Jul 29: At least 13 houses were burnt down in a massive fire at Kamba village in West Siang district in the wee hours today.

The devastating fire broke out at about 2.30 this morning near the premises of the Kamba Primary Health Center (PHC) and engulfed several houses. The PHC building has also been reported partially damaged by the fire. However, there have been no reports of any human casualty. The district administration has provided Rs 4000 each to the victim families as immediate relief.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Nabam Tuki has expressed grief over the fire mishap that occurred at Kamba village.

Tuki has directed the District Administration to assess the damage and losses caused to public as well as private properties and distribute relief as per norms.

The Chief Minister regretted that despite several appeals and advices similar fire mishaps keep recurring across the state. He reiterated that extreme precaution must be maintained to avert such incidents, especially in villages where most of the houses are made of bamboo and thatched roofs, prone to fire accidents.

Meanwhile, the Hirik Hiru Students’ Union has appealed the state government  for  immediate setting up of a fire service station at Kamba saying that it is the long pending demand.

Requesting the concern authority for providing immediate relief to the fire victims, it further appealed the well wishers to lend their helping hand to the victims.

 

 

PWD minister reviews progress of TAH

ITANAGAR, Jul 29: PWD Minister Chowna Mein reviewed the progress of Trans-Arunachal Highway in a meeting with highway engineers and various contracting agencies here today.

The Minister, while addressing the Engineers and representatives of the contracting agencies took serious note of the slow progress of some of the projects. While admitting the prolonged monsoon and remoteness of the region, he opined that slow progress cannot be attributed to longer monsoon. The engineers and the contracting agencies should devise proper work program to expedite implementation and the work within specified time period.

“The Govt of Arunachal Pradesh is very serious on timely implementation of the highway projects and will not hesitate to debar non-performing contracting agency from participation in future bidding including termination of contract in extreme cases,” the minister cautioned.

Responding to complaint by some contracting agencies on local disturbance hindering work progress, the minister assured to take up the matter with District Administrations.

Further, while emphasizing on proper monitoring of projects, he requested the Parliamentary Secretary (PWD) to carry out regular review of the projects to ensure adhering to the time-line set during review meeting.

Mein also appealed all concerned to mobilise adequate efforts for timely completion of projects.

The Minister had reviewed the work status of TAH as a prelude to the review meeting of Union Minister, MoRTH, scheduled on August 2 in Guwahati.

Parliamentary Secretary (PWD) TN Thongdok and Commissioner (PWD) Gonesh Koyu were also present besides the Chief Engineers.

 

 

PPA blames Cong Govt. for land encroachment problem

ITANAGAR, Jul 29: People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) has categorically blamed the ruling Congress Government for the unplanned growth of town and land encroachment problem in the state.

The land encroachment is a problem the Government has created for itself. Encroachment is going on unabated in the state Capital as well as the district headquarters as the Congress Govt could not chalk out a master plan even for the state capital during its long regime, PPA said in a release.

The party said that the present eviction drive against the land encroachers in capital complex is a too late process to initiate by the authority as some of the encroachers have already constructed multi-storeyed building in their encroached land.

PPA claimed that all the structures/ buildings constructed on government allotted land should not be evicted.

“If at all a building constructed on allotted land needs to be dismantled the victim must get proper compensation and rehabilitation,” the party said. Further, “eviction drive should be carried out without discrimination by following proper eviction procedure.”

The party suggested the government to take proper measures to discourage encroachment and expand the area of State capital and district headquarters with minimum urban infrastructure in planned manner.

PPA also appealed to all encroachers of the Government land to cooperate with the administration and voluntarily vacate the encroached land for sake of planned growth and beatification of our city and towns.

 

 

DC, SP visit  Daporijo rape victim

DAPORIJO, Jul 29: Upper Subansiri Deputy Commissioner Tahang Taggu and Superintendent of Police Apang Tamut visited the 6-year- old rape victim at District Hospital Daporijo today and enquired about her well being.

Expressing his shock over the shameful incident, Taggu said that the accused will be awarded with exemplary punishment as per Indian Penal Code.

He appealed to the public to cooperate with the district administration to maintain peace and make Daporijo a crime free zone. Saying that people’s cooperation was a must to maintain law and order situation, the SP urged conscious citizens to inform police if there is any doubt and someone indulge in anti-social activities.

Deputy Commisioner Taggu contributed some amounts to the victim for her better treatment and assured the family members to extend all possible help from DA to the victim for her welfare.

Aruanchal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society Dumporijo also visited the victim and her family and extended some financial assistance to the victim for treatment.

The branch APWWS team also met the Deputy Commissioner and OC and inquired about the incident.

Condemning the crime in its strongest term, APWWS appealed to the law enforcing authority to award exemplary punishment to the accused as per law.

Meanwhile, Dumporijo branch of APWWS stressed the need for lady police officer and juvenile home in the district.

 

 

AIMSU applauds rejection of forest clearance

ITANAGAR, Jul 29: Welcoming the recommendation of Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) of Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) to reject the forest clearance for 3000MW Dibang Multipurpose Project (DMP), All Idu Mishmi Students Union (AIMSU) in a release said that the recommendation came as a big slap on the state’s forest department for preparing shoddy report on diversion of forest land required for construction of Dibang project.

The Union claimed that during the public hearing held in March last also, it had demanded transparency in the process of  identifying land to be acquired for compensatory afforestation (CA). “Much of the land identified for CA has thick forest cover, which cannot be accepted for CA. Also many of these lands identified are community land, agricultural plot and where important highways are coming up,” it said.

The FAC also had recommended cumulative impact studies in Dibang river Basin, which is a welcome step, the Union said adding “this concern was also raised during public hearing. We are happy that MoEF has taken note of our every concern.” While urging the state government to clean up its act first before pointing fingers at anti dam movement led by indigenous people, the Union said   “the development projects in Arunachal are not slowed by anti dam protests but by the government’s own inherent incompetency to carry forward the task of development.”

 

 

Scanty rainfall affects paddy cultivation

RUKSIN, Jul 29: Insufficient rainfall is badly affecting paddy cultivation at Ruksin, Bilat, Sille-Oyan, Pasighat, Mebo Nari and Koyu areas under East Siang during the ongoing peak growing season.

East Siang district has witnessed very weak monsoon with poor rainfall so far. There was no heavy shower that is required for sali cultivation.

The district received good and sufficient rainfall during June-July last year resulting in increase in rice production.

This time, the farmers have been forced to invest more money, time and energy in order to grow sali paddy. Most farmers, who used to produce sali seedlings through natural irrigation means, are not being able to transplant rice seedling in their fields due to the drought-like condition.

The State Agricultural Department has no plan to facilitate mechanical irrigation in the paddy fields.

It may be mentioned here that two improved verities of Sali paddy, namely “Deku” and “Shillong” are cultivated in the hilly-terrain and plain area lands.

 

 

CRS-2013 decides to establish Cancer Research Hospital in Arunachal

ITANAGAR, Jul 29: The two-day Clinical Research Summit 2013, which concluded in New Delhi today, unanimously decided to establish a 150-bed Cancer Research Hospital in Arunachal Pradesh and 450-bed ultra modern hospitals in the districts.

The valedictory session of the Summit concluded with Indira Gandhi Technological and Medical Sciences University, Arunachal Pradesh signing Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) with the leading hospitals of India, including the world renowned Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, New Delhi, National Heart Institute, New Delhi, Delhi Heart and Lung Institute, New Delhi in the presence of Padi Richo, Parliamentary Secretary, Land Management, Urban Development, Town and Country Planning and the respective Heads of the concern hospitals, including Maj. HPS Ahluwalia, Dr. OP Yadava and Dr. Sunil Khetrapal besides the Chancellor Dr. PR Trivedi and Director Arvind K Das.

Addressing the valedictory function, Richo welcomed the efforts of medical and health entrepreneurs from different states to come to Arunachal for creating needed medical facilities in the state in association with the Indira Gandhi Technological and Medical Sciences University.

He informed the wishes and aspirations of the Chief Minister Nabam Tuki and the people of Arunachal Pradesh to create world class health facilities in the State by also establishing the first drugless therapy and medical care centre by introducing polypathic treatments.

Earlier, Chancellor Dr. PR Trivedi and Director Arvind K Das presented a ‘Masterplan Paradigm’ for a ten year development project for establishing different departments of the university at Ziro.

Ering inspects Tara Tamak bridge site,  stresses on early completion of the project

PASIGHAT, Jul 29: The Union Minister of State, Minority Affairs, Ninong Ering personally inspected the Tara Tamak steel bridge construction today on the way to Mebo-Dhola road as residents had been complaining of the delay in its completion. Taking serious note, he said it has been a headache for us and called for blacklisting the contractor “Quadricon Ltd. Mumbai” for their failure.

While admitting that inordinate delay in completion of the said bridge is causing a great deal of dissatisfaction among the people of East Siang and Dibang Valley districts, the UMoS Ering stated “I really wonder why the contractor has been too slow? These people are making fools of us”. The only mode of public transportation between the two districts is by boat only because of the absence of the bridge and contractor must think our miseries, he added. Since this bridge will become a landmark for East Siang, Ering assured to take up the issue with the state’s Chief Minister Nabam Tuki and PWD Minister Chowna Mein on priority so that the work can be reassigned to the PWD for early completion of Tara Tamak and Kadang Bridges.

The UMoS Ering also reviewed the progress of on ongoing construction of Tatsing Bridge and stressed upon the engineers to accord priority to the project which is near completion. Extending his tour to Debang Valley Ering took stock of the post flood situation. He was very shocked to see the dilapidated condition of the flood hit Paglam Secondary School building and teaching strength of school. He was informed that the secondary school is running with five regular and three SSA teachers. Ering assured the Principal to take up the issue seriously with the education ministry and also inspected the additional class room building funded by him under MPLAD. At the end of his tour, the minister held a development meeting with the local officers and PRI members at Paglam extended his tour to Keba village to review the progress of Keba community hall construction which was also funded by him. On his return journey Ering visited Namsing village under Mebo subdivision where he gave spot sanction of an ambulance fulfilling the long pending demand of the locals.

Saint Claret’s bids farewell to Fr. Benoy

ITANAGAR, Jul 29:  Saint Claret College, Ziro (SCCZ) gave an emotional farewell to Rev. Fr. Benoy Joseph, CMF, who served the college in various capacities over the last eight years.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Utpal Talukdar, one of the senior faculty members, recalled the salient features of the tenure of Fr. Benoy and how the college grew, under his leadership, in enrollment, diversity of courses, infrastructure, and hostel facilities.

The college also bagged cent percent pass in the university examinations several times.

Fr. (Dr.) Paulson Veliyannoor, principal, thanked his predecessor for his committed efforts at the service of higher education in Arunachal Pradesh and wished him the very best in his future fields of service.

In his response, Fr. Benoy observed that if he was able to be successful at Saint Claret’s, it was because of the twin blessing he had—a committed faculty and an industrious and cooperative student community.

He also wished the best of success to the new team consisting of Dr. Paulson (principal), Fr. Allwyn Mendoz (vice principal—academics & student affairs), and Fr. Walter Naveen (vice principal—administration), the last of whom took charge today.

Fr. Benoy joined Saint Claret’s in 2005 as its vice principal when the college was still a fledgling. From 2010 to 2013, he led the college as its principal. The event also witnessed the release of the first issue of the Campus Wall Paper, The Claret Times, brought out by the Department of Mass Communication.

Mobile towers are hazardous

Dear Editor,

The mobile technology is a boon to the whole world as it gives chance for faster communication with near and dear ones. But how many of us know that the mobile towers have been a health hazard to many? One classic example is from Jaipur where a whole family was diagnosed with cancer after they were exposed to radio frequency radiations. There are many residents of Kasliwals in Jaipur complaining of low immunity, headaches and sleep disorders. Last year the World Health Organization said that the international Agency for research on Cancer had classified radio frequency Electromagnetic radiations as possible Carcinogenic to humans based on an increased risk for glioma, a malignant brain cancer being associated with wireless phones. The Global health watchdog also has advocated for studies on the subject.

All don’t agree on the direct impact of mobile towers on human health perhaps due to the pressure of multinational companies but will the authorities in Arunachal look into the matter and shift the mobile towers which are in the precincts of human inhabitant areas to where there is no human population.

Please clear the confusion

Dear Editor,

Through the column of your esteemed daily I would like to seek clearance from the Department of School Education regarding the recent syllabus of Class-XII English Core in which the concerned department has issued a direction to teach the particular Novel "Lord of Flies" by William Golding. But to my utter surprise the CBSE in its Notification on 17th June 2013 has directed that the above mentioned Novel being dropped for the session 2013-14. Instead the Novel "The Hound of the Baskervilles” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is to be introduced and taught for the final examination of March 2014 clearly and there will be no choice of novels in class -XII English Core. So, I would like to appeal the concerned authorities to clarify the matters for which the discrepancy may not arise in the future course.

Hurray-CM rides on National Highway 52-A

Dear Editor,

This is apropos to news item published in your daily recently under the headline “CM takes stock of road condition”. Finally, those eyes behind the glass have been opened, by whose grace? But it has opened.

Ultimately, our beloved CM has landed on this amazing National Highway 52-A despite his hectic schedule. And to temporarily heal our wound, he has delivered a beautiful statement saying, GoAP has taken the note of deteriorated road condition caused by the monsoon which needs to be addressed at the earliest.

Poor monsoon made escape goat, when the quality of work itself has been so underrated, without proper planning, since its inception.

In addition, his faithful colleagues PWD, Finance & Planning Minister Chowna Mein and Planning Parliamentary Secretary Nabam Rebia have said to endorse the CM’s statement.

Dear Sir, take a note, we are not surprised but over-whelmed by your words, which sounds so good that at least you feel the same.

We all know that it is fruitless to apprise them of the suffering’s faced by common citizen. Because, their lavish cars have got big-big wheel’s to withstand those precarious potholes. Unlike our tiny wheels, which has to deal with bangs and bruises, every time; even while riding slowly.

Also do people of this state always need to scream that they want proper road communication and not some virtual communication like opening of CM’s official website?  

Today, the dream of democracy, implanted in our mind is a sort of flaw democracy, which reads like this; “democracy- of the rich, for the rich, and by the rich”.

Concept changed thanks to PHED

Dear editor,

Through your esteemed daily I would like to draw attention of concerned authorities of PHED, Ziro especially Executive Engineer on the quality of water supplied to various villages of Ziro. The water supplied by department in villages of Ziro like Bulla, Hari, Hija etc. is really unfit for domestic consumption and totally irregular. During dry seasons hardly we get water through pipeline and in rainy season water is full of mud and sand, even its colour is dark yellowish or brownish. During our school days we read pure water is transparent, colourless and odourless. But PHE Department has totally proved this concept as wrong and came out with its new property of water, that villages are supplied now. So in this regard I request concerned authorities of PHED Ziro to look into the matter at earliest and supply atleast usable water to the villagers.

Efforts to bring down child mortality

The United Nations children's agency commended the Government of Bangladesh for committing to end preventable child deaths in the country before 2035, building on its success of lowering maternal and child mortality. "There's a lot to learn from Bangladesh. Between 1991 and 2011, under-five deaths fell by almost 75 per cent, thanks, in part, to its commitment to innovation and knowledge-sharing," said UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) Executive Director Anthony Lake.

About 60 per cent of child deaths in Bangladesh happen during the first 28 days of birth, mostly due to birth asphyxia, neonatal infections, prematurity and complications at birth, according to the Government of Bangladesh and UNICEF.

Taking effective steps to counter neonatal deaths is a "challenge", UNICEF has said, as 71 per cent of deliveries in the country still take place at home.

In addition, the main reasons for deaths of children under the age of five are pneumonia, drowning and diarrhoea. Malnutrition is also a threat, with 41 per cent of children in the same age group experiencing stunted growth.

Despite these obstacles, the Government has pledged to scale up "simple and cost-effective" interventions involving a broad range of stakeholders and to regularly monitor progress.

Among its plans, the Government has committed to scaling-up nutrition packages for women, infants and young children.

Bangladesh is one of 24 countries that have stepped up efforts to bring down neonatal and child mortality to 20 per 1,000 live births in line with UNICEF's global initiative known as 'Commitment to child survival: a promise renewed'. These efforts also move the country further in achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDG) 4 and 5 on reducing child mortality and improving maternal health by 2015.
